WANT

Tia was working at the computer, getting a new online photography portfolio together (at this writing, there were still problems with an old section we were revamping; it’s redirecting to a finished “Fine Art Photography” section). Mago, wanting his mother’s attentions and affections, began banging hard with a magnifying glass on the computer case which is inconveniently on the floor. Tia said: “Mago, don’t be mean to the computer!” and he replied “No mommy, I want to be mean.” and banged harder. Out went the computer. The power supply is apparently dead. Or something else. It’s fortunate Tia had the new part of her portfolio uploaded to our site before this. I’m typing this entry after work from my work.

[Update 01-20] The computer seems fine – either the power cable was loose, or – I think the motherboard has a detector that auto-shuts-off past a disturbance threshold. Disconnected and then reconnected to power, it’s booting and running normally.

Tiny Fingers

Tia’s Photography BFA Final Show is entitled “Tiny Fingers” and is a series of portraits of infants and toddlers using sign language in familiar settings.

If these images don’t show in your browser, the photographs will be on display in the Brigham Young University Harris Fine Arts Center, Gallery 303, May 16th-31st. The gallery is open 9 to 5. There will be an opening reception May 19th, 7-9pm. The boy in this photograph is 21 months old and is signing “mom”.

2 Photographs

Tia got two photograhs into the BYU Graduate Student Art Show yesterday.

My sister got three works in the show.

[Update; The three works Tia entered are entitled Faith, Hope, and Charity. Of the two that got in, my brother-in-law wisecracks: now she has no hope. Ha ha. Also I know there may be people out there who distantly sneer at such blatantly virtuous titles. Anyone may, of course, choose to be cynical about blatancy. I think her photographs (made to poloroids, lifted, and neatly wrinkled) combine a skillful and subtle crafsmanship, but I’m biased.]

Conversations (#2)

Recently Tia made delicious chicken Tacos. When we ate, Tia found a hair from her head in her taco.

Tia: “It’s a prize! That’s why they call it a kids meal!.. .. really, I just miss my mom’s cooking, so I had to put it in.”

Moments later: “What can we get Marvin for his birthday from ShopKo that he’ll want?”
Me: “Love, acceptance, and success.”
Tia: “How about a little wicker basket?”

From this sequence she concluded that “I’m being funny today.”

Later in the evening she addressed baby in his dirty diaper as “Party pants”.

Conversations

A string of my thoughts led to this exchange last night:

Me: “I think your retard detector broke and you ended up with me.”
Tia: “I appreciate your sympathy.. or something.. whatever that was.”

Then today:
Me: “I am so sick of this fabric over the zipper of these shorts folding back. .. The shorts are as ashamed of the fly as I am of my..”
Tia: “Manhood.”
